Information for Farmers and Veterinarians
Autogenous vaccines are custom-made vaccines prepared with cultures of microorganisms (isolates / strains) taken from an affected herd or population.
Autogenous vaccines can be used when
- Commercial vaccines are not available or accessible
- Commercial vaccines have lost their efficacy
- Commercial vaccines are not cross-protective across disease-causing strains.
An autogenous vaccine can only be used on farms from which the microorganism was isolated, or, in the case of an epidemiological linkage between these farms (e.g. between brood stock, nursery and grow out farm).
Autogenous vaccines are regulated under the Animals and Birds Act and fall under "veterinary biologics".
